Whakarongotai Marae

On Thursday Waikanae school walked down to Whakarongotai Marae to represent our tukutuku panels, our treasures. The Kapa Haka group went in first to greet the rest of the school onto the marae. Six people carried the tukutuku panels in. Mr Campbell said a few words about the panels and the Kapa haka group sang a couple of songs and lots of people got tired from standing. The Tangata Whenua said some words too. After the Powhiri our class left so we could come back later to do some fun activities.

When we got back to school we had morning tea then we lined up to go back to the marae. There were 5 different activities. They were, Photos in a cardboard canoe, weaving fish and  stars, making booklets and colouring, making matariki lanterns and Taonga puoro made out of rulers and string. Me and Cara went to go make a booklet. The booklet was a mihi. Then we went to the weaving but nobody helped you so we just made springs out of paper. Then we went to the matariki lanterns and we didn’t have much time to make them beautiful but we finished them.We walked back to school talking about how fun the trip was.We had a fantastic time.
